Google Android began its journey with launch of HTC G1 on Oct 22 2008. Since then there have been 60 Android devices made by 21 companies. There have been 5 Android releases since then. Device manufacturers and carriers have been trying hard to keep up with the pace of Android development. Now the big daddy G1 is the one who has to leave out of Froyo.
Although Android team does say that G1 is capable of running Froyo, it is very unlikely that it will get OTA (Over The Air) update of Froyo. G1 has still not got Android 2.1 Éclair update and its currently running Android 1.6 firmware version.
Android 2.2 is designed to run on slower CPU with its Dalvik JIT compiler capability. But the limited memory size of 256 MB on G1 is causing problem for its system update. However rooted G1 have been found running Android 2.1. This is achieved by installing /data partitions on sdcard.
This is very sad thing for Android team as G1 was first Android device and has got special status with all Android developers. Most Android developers started writing apps and rooting using G1. Its status as Google Dev phone (ADP1) established itself as a hacker’s device.
But with every new thing old one has to go. I guess it’s time to say good bye to G1 and get one with newer Android device in market.
