Selling high-end smartphone is a complex game. There are many device-manufacturers selling different devices with high end capability to get your money. In this high competition market to achieve sales of 100,000 units within few weeks is a big task. But last month, two companies have achieved it in totally different market using Android OS. Yes we are talking about Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and HTC Droid Incredible.
While US carrier Verizon says it is not able to keep up with the demand for HTC Droid Incredible; Japan’s NTT DoCoMo has declared Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as its best selling smart phone. X10 has reportedly sold 100,000 units in 20 days compared to HT-03A’s 80,000 units sold in 10 months. we can see how far a success Xperia has been for Docomo. It is a same story with Verizon that has to place a “sold out” board at its outlet for Droid Incredible. Verizon’s CEO Lowell McAdam said that his company sold 100,000 units of Droid Incredible in the first two days. As a result of the strong demand coupled with shortages of the Incredible's AMOLED display, the smart phone would not be available again for several weeks.
Now the United States and Japan are totally different market. Japan’s mobile industry has always been years ahead from the rest of the world in terms of technology and usage. NTT Docomo’s I-mode first started mobile web revolution in late 1990’s.The feature phones coupled with smart network made I-mode a revolutionary product. Over the last couple of years US mobile industry has leapfrogged with the help of Smartphone’s based on next generation OS like Apple Iphone, Blackberry, Palm’s WebOS, and Windows Mobile. Apart from underneath Android OS, both devices are very different from each other. In spite of these seemingly vast differences, we can derive few similar traits which made both this device successful.
- Understanding local consumer: This is one area which can make a device hit or loss. SE Xperia was a total blooper in US market. The market in the US is a lot advanced where customer wants to buy the latest and best device. Xperia with its Android 1.6 and just decent hardware was not good enough for the US, where there better Android smart phones like Droid Incredible. On the other hand HTC has yet to gain significant market share in Japan where Xperia is a big hit now. For most of Japanese customers Android version did not mattered much. Xperia’s brilliant marketing campaign did the trick. Most customers went to store after watching Xperia video ads.
- Brand value: This is one of the biggest factors. HTC with its constant stream of Android mobiles with Sense UI and high end hardware has created strong brand image. It is looked as a company with latest technology products. Similarly Japanese’ trust in Sony brand is unshakeable. They will be first to lap up any Sony product in market.
- Carrier support: This is very crucial to gain in-roads in market. Without a good network support a device manufacturer cannot get sales. Google tired to go alone with Nexus One and had to close its store. With DoCoMo, Xperia has good carrier partner with loyal customer base. It goes for Verizon too. It has put lot of marketing muscle in pushing Droid earlier. Now that brand name is helping it push Droid Incredible which is the best mobile at present in market.
Getting these three factors at right place has made all the difference for
Sony Ericsson Xperia and HTC droid incredible. With release of Froyo, we will be seeing more Android mobiles getting popular in the market.
